At Little Flower Montessori, we are committed to providing the highest possible standard in nutrition for our children. Thus, we have developed a plan that directs children through the process of healthy snack preparation.
The Montessori philosophy emphasizes environment as being pivotal in the healthy development of children. This includes the classroom, at home, and even within the community. Our aim is to pave the way for a lifetime of healthy habits by encouraging a balanced nutrition and physical activity in early childhood, while simultaneously helping children reach their full potential and prevent chronic diseases later in life.
We understand that it’s extremely important to expose your child to healthy organic fruits and vegetables at a young age. Food preferences that a child develops in their early years remain fairly stable and are reflected by the food choices they make in later childhood.
In our Healthy Life Practices program, children participate in the nurturing of our organic garden. In addition, we avoid canned foods as they contain BPA, and instead use local, fresh ingredients when available. We learn that even trace amounts of chemicals, Trans fats, food dyes, and unhealthy sweets have a greater negative effect on small bodies.
Our snacks are prepared in order to provide a good serving of healthy nutrition. Furthermore, we ensure that the snacks won’t fill up the children too much before lunch. Through this process, our goal is to educate children on practical life preparation tasks and sensory exposure to various tastes, textures, and food preparation that is visually appealing.
In addition, Little Flower Montessori teachers will sit with the children during lunchtime so that they can model healthy habits as well as table etiquette. For example, students will learn proper napkin placement, utensil use, chair placement, conversation, and food placement. Children also get to partake in the decorating and setting of the tables. Through this, we emphasize the importance of mealtime, making it a very special part of our day.
Under the guidance of Laura Motosko, RD, Little Flower Montessori has developed these practices in order to help children grow into healthy adults.
